Well CPU’s have a heat limit when it comes to air cooling that is why 4+Ghz processors aren’t on the market. The only way to gain “power” is to grow laterally with more cores whatever you want to call it. So to say speeds can go a lot higher, in reality they cannot with the current technology at hand for the average user.

I think CPU’s in a way have run out of steam. That’s why all that Intel and AMD can pull out of their asses is “More Coresz!!1″. Well whoopdie, now the viruses that run my computer can spam more people at the same time.

Nvidia is guilty of this to a degree as well, with their SLI and Quad-SLI to help me get +3 fps in Crysis.

Really, CPU’s could be plenty faster, but every every time CPU’s do get faster, software instantly counters it by becoming that much less efficient. I envision in the future there will be programing languages that can parse text messages from 13 year olds and turn them into GUI’s with gradients and curvy lines. It’ll take a 64 Core Duothon X-Treme to run notepad, but wtf, just add another 64 cores and you can have iTunes too.

There’s another aspect to this merging of CPU’s and GPU’s besides convenience. Many want to harness the GPU to do non 3D gaming work, this would be faster and easier if the GPU circuitry was on die with the CPU.
